“THE PARADOX OF UNPLANNED” - Book review: World Changers: 25 Entrepreneurs Who Changed Business as We Knew It by John A. Byrne

A compact 360 pages length book that contain 25 amazing rollercoaster story behind the greatest of the great entrepreneurs in the worlds. I read this book because I never completely forget my dream to be a business woman in the future since elementary school. This book indeed gives me new knowledge and horizon because out of these 25 entrepreneurs, I only acknowledge half of them hehe. Sometimes, in the process of learning makes us know more thing we do not know about.

Talking about the paradox of unplanned, I am learning in school and in XLFL that it is really important to set goals and plan how to get there. Yet, it is very intriguing while reading this book, majority of the entrepreneurs never plan to grow and to be this big as they are now, and my question “why they get to place that they do not plan to? And is that true it just happens naturally?”. Anyway, that is just my biggest thought and question after reading this book. If anybody want to give their opinions about this, feel free to do so in the comment section below.

This book makes me amazed by a very diverse background story of each entrepreneurs, about how this entrepreneurs change the way we live our lives, they way we perceive life with their businesses.  Some might say great entrepreneurs are privileged people since born, well after reading this book, they are not privileged people but they are people who make choices and take actions. Yes, there are some entrepreneurs in this book that were inherited the business from their elders such as Herb Kohler Jr. and Ratan Tata, yet they were definitely doing something significant for the company either scaling up or transforming it. The majority are starting their business their own. It is very inspiring to read how these people being persistent, diligent, optimistic, and looking for opportunities anywhere and anytime. In every interview, the writer always asked question “what advice would you give to young entrepreneur or people who are about to start their business?”. Most of the entrepreneurs have the same answer to it which I can sum up as “Being an entrepreneur is not an easy job and easy money. You are working multiple time harder than working at office, working 24/7 non-stop, not seeing result within your first 1-3 years which 1095 days approximately, and there is always possibility of failure. To jump into this career, people should be mentally ready and have a clear vision about their business.” Reed Hasting, the founder of Netflix once said that, “There is no shortcut”. Entrepreneur should endure all of that to make them great as well. This journey is a marathon not a sprint. Be patient and be passionate about it :)

Each business explained in this book has different value as well, there is company like Home Depot founded by Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus and Starbucks founded by Howard Schutz that value their employee so much because they believe their employee are their treasure that build communications directly with their customers. Companies like Amazon founded by Jeff Bezos value their consumers, they put a lot of attention in developing and improving their business in order to fulfill what the consumers want. This book also told that many of the founders that leaved the C-level of the company for couple years, they were coming back again to the company because as they leave, the company performance started to decrease. Michael Dell from Dell Inc. underwent this and realized that the one who have the clearest idea about the company is the founder himself. It creates problem about regeneration of the company, it is really important to choose the right person to do his role.

Overall, I like this book and the substance, and it will be a shortcut for those who want to know 25 entrepreneurs story in just one book. The thing that I do not like is the book that I read is translated book in bahasa, my intention to read the translated one is to read book faster, yet It turned out that this book is counted as the book that takes the longer time to finish. The reason is because the book is translated literally at many parts which make me think twice in reading, and gets me bored as well. Second, -this one is pure based on personal taste of book format- this book format is like a transcript of an interview, so it is not a novel concept which I do not really like.

Happy reading!
