MUN (Model United Nation) Day 1 - Seminar

Hallo Guys!
Today, i just want to share my experience about my first time joining MUN. I got the seminar about MUN,  before I only knew that MUN is an agenda for discussing an issue and find the problem solving. Those who join MUN are delegations from each countries coming from all over the world. They are being the representatives of that country. It sounds cool even though I don’t know the complete definition about MUN itself. Hehehe :D. When I knew that my school was going to provide MUN seminar and the simulation for the fourth and the fifth batch, I got really into spirit to attend that kind of event.  It was held on Saturday 7th of November 2015 until Sunday 8th of November 2015. Finally the day came.
On the first day, I wore my Batik and went to Beringin Hall on 8 am. The keynote speaker had already been there, they were preparing the projector and laptop. There were three people, 2 boys one girl. They were coming from UI (Universitas Indonesia), they are also member of UI MUN club. Not all of students were interested in joining MUN. I don’t know why. The opening was really bored. It was about what is MUN, the historical background of MUN, etc. Then, We were divided into 3 groups. There were 3 classes that we must attend. The concept was moving class.
My first class was negotiating class. The name of the keynote speaker is Mayang, we called her ‘kak Mayang’. I sat on the first line. I just wanted to get the knowledge clearly. Kak Mayang was really fluent in English, I still can hear and understood about the contents. She said that there are 3 basic of negotiation in MUN. The first is ‘look presentable’, means we need to be good looking and give good first impression to other delegates. The second is ‘know all your research’, means you need to know all about your country by doing research before going to conference. The third is ‘Be Confident’.  This is the most important one. We need to be convincing and you need to believe in yourself. If you are not confident enough in delivering the idea, statements, etc.  You can not be trusted and even negotiate with other delegates for example to join your bloc. It’s quite interesting. Then she gave us a game which is related to the lesson.
My second class was about the three documents in MUN. They were position paper, working paper, and draft resolution. Position paper is a statement of a country toward the issue, whether they are pro or cons. You need to say about the past action that your country had already been taken toward the issue, is that success or not, if it is not, what goes wrong, then you need to explain the core problem in your country, you can give some government quotes to make your data is valid, and last but not least give an overview of the solution that your country are offered. Working paper is a paper which is created during the conference. It doesn’t need any formats, it should contain about what had been discussed during the session and your bloc beliefs.  Draft Resolution is the most complicated one for me. There are many phrases that I’ve never known before. It has its format. There are sponsors (the one who made the doc), signatories (those who agree with that doc), general assembly, etc. I cannot even memorize it all. But surely I will make it someday.
My third class was ‘Speech Class’.  The keynote speaker name is Andhika. He is a Student of faculty of law University of Indonesia. He is the first one from UI ever who won the Harvard MUN. He beat 3000 other delegations from all over the world. Speech has its own format.  First thing that we need to say is “Thank you chairs....” , then we can not say “I” but use the words “ we.... or the delegation of (name of country)....”. this is the formal one. There are four speeches that you have to do. They are general speaker list, moderated caucus, present WP/DR, and agenda setting. What we need to do in speech are grab attention, you can start your speech by giving quotes, shocking data, startling statement, etc. you must perform different, so people will know you. Last you need to be liked, it’s so simple, just keep smiling.  After the lessons, He asked us to perform only for the general speaker list.  He took four of us. One of them is me. Then I performed as the delegation of Nigeria talking about child worker issue. Luckily, he said that I already performed well. That made me really happy for a moment.
The classes were over. We were already equipped by many lessons today. Tomorrow will be the day of the MUN simulation. We are going to  have our country name by tonight. I can not wait for tomorrow.
